What is colon hydro?

Colon hydrotherapy in simple terms is the process of flushing water into the large intestine and draining it back out. A gentle stream of water is sent into the colon and this stimulates the colon’s own peristaltic activity and a bowel movement is stimulated. Colon irrigation will help us eliminate the compounds formed by the liver that are deemed toxic. The liver sends these compounds to the liver for clearing. Colon hydrotherapy allows us to stimulate and restore normal body function to the bowels while at the same time decreasing the toxic burden in the body.

What will a session be like?

After a brief introduction of colon hydrotherapy and a review of intake forms, the client will begin the session by wearing customized shorts and positioning themselves sideways on the colon hydro table. A speculum will be inserted by a trained professional. Over the course of the treatment, purified, temperature and pressure regulated water is introduced into the colon via the water hose that is attached to the colon hydro machine. You will experience water flow into the colon in increments, gently stimulating the colon’s natural peristaltic action to release rehydrated softened waste. The release cycle is often experienced with great relief.

How long will it take? What can I expect

The treatment is approximately 45 minutes. A 10-minute initial assessment is required for new patients.

How many sessions do I need? How often?

A minimum of 3 treatments is recommended for optimal results. Treatments are normally done weekly or bi-weekly for an initial one month period. After that initial period, it is normally recommended that maintenance treatments are done every 4-6 weeks. For severe constipation, a minimum of 6 treatments is normally required and done over the span of 3 weeks (eg two treatments per week).

Is it safe? Is it hygenic?

Colon hydrotherapy is very safe and performed by a qualified nurse who is certified in colonic cleansing. Our clinic uses the very best Colon Hydrotherapy equipment. The device itself is thoroughly sterilized after each procedure.

Does colon hydro hurt?

A colonic is normally not painful. A disposable speculum is gently inserted only a couple of inches into the rectum. It is normal to feel a bit of cramping similar to what you may feel when you have to have a bowel movement. Cramping is often due to gas pockets in the intestines. They quickly disappear after the colonic, usually followed by a feeling of well-being.

Who should not have colon hydro (contraindications)?

If you have had abdominal surgery within the past 6 months, intestinal perforation, history of seizures, renal insufficiency, the presence of tumors or cysts, pregnancy, colon or rectal surgery, abdominal hernia, diverticulitis, or congestive heart failure. Your colon therapist will ask you to fill in a form and do a pre-session interview with you to make sure you’re safe to have a colonic.

What results should I expect?

Reactions to treatment range from feeling elated and energized to ill. All of these reactions are normal, and as people continue receiving treatments on an ongoing basis, the more unpleasant reactions tend to subside. Patients often report feeling lighter and less bloated.

What should I do before a colonic?

Before your colonic it is ideal to avoid eating for 2 hours prior to your session, although drinking water or fresh juice is not a problem. For better cleansing results you may eliminate certain foods such as red meats and dairy, and eat plenty of high fiber foods 24-48 hours prior to the procedure.

What should I do after a colonic?

It is recommended to stick to easier to digest foods following your colonic. Foods like warm vegetable soup, warm vegetable or bone broth, steamed vegetables, avocado, and fresh pressed juices are normally ideal post-colonic. Too much roughage for the 24 hours following your colonic may cause cramping or bloating. It is also recommended to drink electrolytes post-treatment and take probiotics. If you feel nauseous or flu-like after your colonic, rest and drink ample water. Additional tips include taking a warm bath, drinking peppermint, fennel, or chamomile tea, and using therapeutic grade essential oil of peppermint.

Will a colonic remove healthy bacteria from my colon?

Both “good” and “bad” bacteria will be washed out during the treatment. Because bacteria multiply so quickly, the bacteria lost will be replaced quickly. Because of the reduction in overall quantity of bacteria, you may also have an opportunity to shift the balance more towards “good” bacteria by supplementing a high-quality probiotic after your colonic.
